HOW TO CHANGE THE WORLD AND TRAVEL WITHOUT JOINING THE MILITARY

 

     Are you finishing school and not sure what you want to do?  Not ready to go to college but eager to learn and do something meaningful? Want to get out of hood but lack the money? There are opportunities to do volunteer work, travel, and get paid to do so. You’ll learn and grow much more than seeing the world with the military.

The Corporation for National and Community Service oversee  three programs:

 

1. AMERICORPS* STATE AND NATIONAL

                       800-942-2677 or www.americorps.gov

 

   Americorps sponsors service programs around the country. You’ll work with others in non-profit organizations for up to one year. For full time service you’ll receive a modest living allowance and health benefits. On completion of your time you’ll also earn an education award of $4,725. You might tutor or mentor youth, assist crime victims, build homes or restore parks. You can apply if you are 17 or over.

 

2. AMERICORPS*VISTA

 

     VISTA will place you in community organizations that help meet the needs of low income people nationwide. You’ll receive the living allowance, health benefits and education award described above. You may choose to receive the end-of-service stipend of $1,200 instead of the education award.

 

           3.  AMERICORPS*NCCC (National Civilian Conservation Corps.)

 

 You’ll receive training in CPR, first aid, leadership and team building and will work on projects in public safety, public health and disaster relief. Housing and meals will be provided – as well as the living allowance. When you complete your term you’ll get an education award of up to $4,725. You can apply if you are between 18 and  24.

             The SCA offers service in national parks, forests and on public lands throughout the U.S. There are many sites available in New York State. The GETREAL Program(getreal@theSCA.org) offers current high school students aged

15 -19 three to five week tuition-free summer work on supervised conservation crews restoring habitats, building trails, exploring the outdoors and maintaining historic sites.

Volunteers live in tents and rustic residences near their worksites. The Conservation Corps and the Internship program offer those 18 and over this experience for anywhere from 3-12 months. You’ll be trained by SCA staff. Your expenses will be paid and you’ll receive a living allowance and a travel grant. Interns are eligible for an educational award from the Corporation for National Service at the end of their time of service.

 

 

CHECK OUT the Red Hook Public Safety Corps

The Red Hook Public Safety Corps is an AmeriCorps program based in the Red Hook Community Justice Center. It accepts 50 members each year to join our program and dedicate a year of their lives to full-time community service in New York City. Members are placed at sites that work towards increasing public safety, public health, and social justice in the community. We accept people age 18 or older, or 17 if they have a GED or high school diploma; our current members range in age from 17 to 68. Aside from the on-site job training that the members receive throughout their term, our program has many benefits: a yearly living stiped of $11,100, free health care, reimbursed childcare, and, at year’s end, an educational award of $4,725. The Public Safety Corps welcomes all applicants to the program, and our members come from all backgrounds, experience levels, and walks of life. Public Allies New York is looking for passionate young adults (18-29) who have the desire and talent to become community leaders.  You can participate participate in a ten month apprenticeship program. Allies perform leadership service four days a week at a non-profit organization such as FoodChange, Bronx Charter School for the Arts or GLSEN. Sites change yearly. The fifth day, Allies attend professional leadership trainings. Allies receive a living allowance of $16,000 for the ten month period, health and child-care benefits  and a $4,725 Americorps educational award upon completion of the program.   Public Allies selects 20-30 apprentices annually.
